Making changes in the land of tulips: ALDI Netherlands

Netherlands – Sustainability at ALDI North

ALDI Netherlands went the extra mile in 2017 to support customers on the road to a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. In a country with more bicycles than people, protecting the environment and the climate also plays an important role.

Through a variety of projects, ALDI Netherlands made a difference in the health of its customers in the period under review. Those projects include improved product combinations with less sugar or salt and the new healthy nutrition partnership with the foundation JOGG, to name just a few examples. We also support our customers in making informed purchasing decisions with the ALDI Transparency Code (ATC), which creates transparency about the origin of poultry and pork, or our sustainability awareness campaign focusing on shopping responsibly (Verantwoord boodschappen doen). When it comes to preventing food waste, we work closely with Wageningen University and Voedselbank Nederland. Just like at ALDI North Germany, ALDI Belgium and ALDI Luxembourg, we too are saying goodbye – or, shall we say, “Doei!” – to disposable bags in the Netherlands. From 2019, we will offer only reusable bags. Beyond that, ALDI Netherlands is making a contribution to protecting the climate. All newly opened stores have an energy label of A+++ or higher, making them especially energy efficient. Since 2015, ALDI Netherlands has also exclusively used green electricity.

Our highlights

74 %

of stores

In the second year of our partnership with Voedselbank Nederland, 74 per cent of our stores donated food to regional food banks. In 2016, that figure still stood at around 29 per cent.

100 %

green electricy

As early as 2015, the power supply of ALDI Netherlands was switched to 100 per cent green electricity. In 2017, it was completely generated by European wind energy.
